Shooting Location - Carpark

For our opening shots, we will introduce the main character in a car, moving through a car park before then getting out the car and showing the skyline behind him. This will be somewhere in Chelmsford City Centre. We chose this location as it gives you some idea of where the artist is from and also his age, as it shows him being able to drive a car. This shows the artist has maturity, something he would want to portray to people who may potentially like his music.

Shooting Location - Riverside

For some underwater shots, we have decided to use our local leisure centre, situated in the city centre. Riverside Leisure Centre (top picture) has diving boards, which one character in the music video will jump before then passing the camera to another character underwater who will be dressed in appropriate water polo gear and then receive and throw a ball. We have asked somebody who plays water polo to be in the video as it then makes it easier for the crew to film him.

Location for Performance

Shots from the set of our performance location, in our schools drama studio. We had access to all the props and lights, to get the correct atmosphere.

Practice Performance

Here we did a practice performance for the music video. i don't think this works very well as its quite boring to watch as he is just standing there and not moving around very much. Also the frame doesn't work very well. However we did get a chance to play around with the lighting so this benefited us there.

Barcelona Footage

Sarah visited Barcelona during filming which meant we could take advantage of this opportunity and she could film using the go pro. We thought that using a go pro could give a certain atmosphere to the music video. Sarah filmed as if she was sharing the experience with her friends whist showing the viewers Barcelona in the background. She filmed in every location she went to and took some great shots on the plane. Sarah came back with over 5 minutes of footage, this was an advantage because we could use quick cuts of it to fit it down to 29 seconds.

Lights and Lip Syncing Experiment

This is a short experiment using sound and light. We wanted to also experiment with showing Alex Echo's character and how it would fit into the song and lighting. After viewing this we found out that the lighting didn't fit in with Alex Echo's personality so we are going to have to film again with different lighting and a different backdrop.

Album Front and Back Cover

These are the front and back covers for Alex Echo's 'Mistaken for strangers' album. We stuck with the black and white theme for the album as we felt it fits in with the image we're trying to convey.

Textual Analysis - Ed Sheeran

Front Cover

When this album first came out it was when he was just becoming incredibly popular, as this is was his debut album the front cover is an extreme close up of his face promoting himself and appealing to his female audience. Not heavily stylised cover, however its though his face was manipulated to looks like some kind of drawing, it could connect with the idea of Ed Sheeran being a true artist and selling himself as a kind of romantic, independent artist. The album title ('Plus') is simple and represented as minimalist as well, with the symbol '+'. The orange colour represents his 'ginger' brand. It also adds some warm and passionate atmosphere to the cover that might represent Ed Sheeran as a warm singer (his songs on this album were often emotional), which is attractive for his female audience. The use of a single orange filter also carries the idea of minimalism. The font used is also simple. However, the font used looks like it has been typed by a typewriter which does have connotations of minimalism and simplicity. The cat paw is an icon of his brand since his drunk music video which was very popular and it included his cat on it. It iconic symbol is also on his guitar.

Back Cover
Theres no stylised graphic or photograph on the back of the album cover, keeping the idea of simplicity and minimalism conventional of the genre and the artist. The list of the track list of 12 songs, using the same font and colour as the artists name. The back also includes Ed Sheeran's website helping to promote the artist and creating connection to fans.

Group analysis

These pictures are of our evaluation of the group and problems we could face and how they can be overcome.

Go Pro

Due to our music video containing some adventurous activities such as mountain biking, swimming etc. We thought that using a GoPro would be more suitable to film with. This way we are able to use the camera underwater and with the size we are able to tie it to the bike.
Here we played around with the GoPro to see what effect it gave, we found that it gave a round lense effect which would work well as it gives an open effect that could present that the world is open to adventures.
We also thought that the picture qaulity was good, however once exported onto youtube the picture is a less qaulity. We will try and resolve this by adapting settings on premiere.

Storyboard

Storyboard Ideas- First Draft

This was our old storyboard ideas, there are a few problems with our idea such as it is not very clear as to the ideas we have for the video. we did not really think about our timings for example certain shots such as the mountain biking needs a longer section of the song than the child in the playground. We need to work at spacing the shots our effectively. We also need to consider shooting the scene from different angles. This is important to get different cuts of the scene so that the film does not become boring, music videos typically have lots of cuts we need to follow suit with this as not to bore our audience. We had not considered the time taken to get the GoPro in and out of the bag. It is a good idea to use the cameras as well as he GoPo o break up the video. This might be having the bike ride past as stationary camera. This can be quite an effective technique.

When we worked out the real transition timings we realised that one of the clips would be left with just 1 second allotted time. This means we have to adapt our storyboard to correct for this problem. After drafting the storyboard we will have to make it a lot clearer and irradiate the problem o the 1 second shot

  • Complications with the task

  • Not everybody was available at the time of filming, therefore we had to be waiting around for people in order to film
  • Despite always wearing school clothes, the bottom halves were different, as was the teachers outfit, losing continuity
  • Some of the footage wasn't filmed because of the time limit on making the production
  • People used the location we used for filming too, therefore it was difficult to find a time to film
  • This was the first time we had every lip synced, therefore it was hard to do

Similar artists and genres - Covers and Websites

This is the website for 'Two Door Cinema Club', an indie band from Northern Ireland. At the top of the page, they have their latest music video playing automatically as soon as you enter the site. this immediately advertises their music before you have even found out about the band. Also on their home page, they have links to their upcoming gigs, videos and photos and also a link to sign up, to get the breaking news on the band and their events. Their social media links are also highlighted right at the top of the screen.

This is the website for Ben Howard, a solo artist. His website is much plainer than Two Door's. He has a picture of himself and links to his newest album and single right at the top of the page. He has no links to anywhere else on the website, just his homepage has the dates of his upcoming gigs. He only has one social media link which is tiny at the top left of the page.

This is the album cover for 'Foster The People'. They are an indie band from the UK. Their album cover features the main men in the band, all in the same setting with similar props. It is quite hard to distinguish who is who due to props obstructing the picture.

This is the album cover for Alt-J's album 'An Awesome Wave'. This is a contrast to Foster The People, as this is very abstract and doesn't mean anything in particular. It doesn't advertise the band in any way, which leads us to wonder why they used this piece of artwork.

    Music Video Inspiration

This video is an inspiration for our own video. The changes in camera is similar to what we wish to achieve. This can also give us an idea of how long each character is on screen for.

This video is also an idea we are looking to incorporate. The video is exclusively performance, with changing lights and camera angles. This would be good for the chorus of our song, which we are looking to use as a chance to promote the artist and show lip syncing

This video is just of a solo indie artist compared to The Vaccines who are a four man band. This video is also a performance, but is in black and white. This is to give it an old fashioned feeling because the artist himself has a very old sounding voice. But, it focuses just on one person, which will be similar to our video.

    Song Choice

This is the song we have chosen to create a music video to. The song is by indie band 'The Rifles'. It has a fast tempo, which is what we were looking for in a song.

The moon is waiting for me
It finds me feeling all loaded up and alone
With no one there to hold
In the art of my control I found my calling
And I've been fooling out of bars'
There's a banging in my head that aches
And my fingers start to shake like I just gave my heart away

    One day to another day
    I wasn't looking for a change but a change I'll better make
I'm stuck and it's not enough
But if it wasn't for luck then I wouldn't make the same mistakes

And now it's so hard to please, the way I'm feeling
Better buckle up, be all the way, I might just finally chase
All the time of yesterday, will I be leaving
But little things are never wrong
'Cause there's much pretty things like love
Pay little mind, gotta step the game
'Cause it took too long to take a walk down the temple anyway

    One day to another day
    I wasn't looking for a change but a change I'll better make
I'm stuck and it's not enough
But if it wasn't for luck then I wouldn't make the same mistakes

Would've said that I loved you
    Would've thought those silly lies
If I could give my world to you
Would it feel like another lie

There's a banging in my head that aches
And my fingers start to shake like I just gave my heart away

    One day to another day
I wasn't looking for a change but a change came anyway
I'm stuck like a sitting duck
But if it wasn't for luck then I wouldn't make the same mistakes

    Lip Syncing Task

We did this lip singing experiment to see how well Dom was able to sing a song making the words as clear as possible. This was also helpful as we were able to experiment with editing it to make sure it was spot on, we had to play around with speed etc.

    Prelim Task

For our music video prelim task, I worked with Ben Flatt and Dom Punt to recreate the video of Busted's What I Go To School For. We had a list to choose from and we made a quick decision in choosing this song.

This is the final video for our prelim task, preparing us to make a music video.

    Complications with the task:

  • Not everybody was available at the time of filming, therefore we had to be waiting around for people in order to film
  • Despite always wearing school clothes, the bottom halves were different, as was the teachers outfit, losing continuity
